1. Chembra Peak

Chembra being the highest peak in Wayanad, is an ideal stop for adventure lovers and

trekkers to get involved in trekking activities. Located near the town of Meppadi, it’s 8 km

south of Kalpetta. The trek may take almost 3 hours to complete the whole climbing which

takes you to the Heart Lake, which’s said to have never dried up. Do not forget to take prior

permission from the Meppadi Forest Office for the trek. Since the number of slots available

are quite a few, reaching the site early in the morning is recommended. Expect leeches all

the way in the woods that you’re also recommended to carry precautionary things like

salt or dettol. Trekking charges to a group of 10 members is Rs. 500 and for international

tourists it costs Rs. 1000 for a group.


Tickets are distributed at the office which is on the way to the point of trekking. Since the No

of slots per day is 200, make sure you have a slot. Tourists reach at the office before 6 am

during weekends. Even though Chembra trekking is worth experiencing all year around, there are seasons during which the authorities close the trek either due to heavy rainfall or forest fire. 2. Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

The scenic Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, an abundance of various flora and fauna species, is

a storehouse of wildlife at Wayanad. Jeep Safari inside the forest is the major attraction in

which wildlife sighting is possible. Tourists are not allowed to the outer zone, as the forest

department controls over the area. The safari is usually done twice a day. The time for the

safari ranges between 7:00 am and 10:00 am in the morning and 3:00 pm and 5 pm in the

afternoon. Safari after 5 pm is not possible. You’ll have to pay a fair amount for the jeeps

individually for a safari. Bird watching, watch tower stay and night camping is active in here.

3. Thirunelli Temple

A temple set amidst the valleys surrounded by mountains and woods, Thirunelli Temple is

one of the major attractions in North Wayanad, highly popular for it’s papanasini river and

panchatheertham. The temple dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu is famous for it’s tranquility and for it’s architecture. The temple can be considered as a tourist spot as well for the beauty

and breathtaking atmosphere it offers. Usually, believers come here to do religious rituals.

Rituals are performed in the banks of stream Papanasini.


The temple is open at 5:30 in the morning to 12.30 pm and evening 5.30 to 8.00 pm.

The temple is located 32 kms away from Mananthavady.

A beautifully aligned dam in the middle of Banasura hills, Banasura Sagar dam is a group of

islands. Being the largest earth dam in India, a lot of tourists come to visit the dam everyday.

The dam made up of massive stacks of stones and boulders offers boat services. If you’re

on a picnic to Wayanad, a speed boat drive at the dam is inevitable.

5. Meenmutti waterfalls

The three tiered waterfall, Meenmutti waterfalls is the largest waterfall in Wayanad. This

spectacular waterfall is at a height of 300 metres. You have to trek almost 2 hours in the

jungle to reach the waterfalls and to take in the splashes. If you’ve plans to visit Meenmutti,

it’s recommended to make sure that the site is open considering the whether at Wayanad.

Since it’s very dangerous during monsoon, the authorities usually keep and maintains their

6. Kurumbalakkotta hills

An exciting new destination at Wayanad, Kurumbalakkotta has become a popular tourist

spot. The area does not agree to staying at the camp due to an issue created by the tourists

regarding the pollution. A sunrise at the hills of Kurumbalakkotta is not to be missed, for it’s

mesmerising,happy and quiet scenic pictures. You’ll have to reach the site by 4 am so that

you won’t miss the sun rising beyond the horizon. The only cost you have to spend at

Kurumbalakkotta is the amount of entry.

Climbing up the Ghats, the first place you notice at Wayanad is the Pookode lake where

various activities can be done. Being the smallest and highest altitude freshwater lake,

Pookode offers activities like horse riding, boat riding etc. People also come here for a

relaxation from the hectic life. The entry fee to an adult is Rs. 20.

8. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary otherwise known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is the second

largest Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala. The best time to visit here is during December to May so that Wildlife sight at abundance is sighted. There’s a two hour jungle safari by the forest

department. If you’re planning to visit Wayanad, Muthanga can’t be missed. You’ll be

provided with a guide and an expert driver, for the jeep safari. The trekking is open to

everyone after 7 pm until 10 am and then at 3 pm to 5 pm. If it’s alright for you to spend

enough money, the Inspection Bungalow or the Forest Wood House are available for the

stay over. Serambi is one of the major attractions that can accommodate a maximum of 4

9. Kuruva Dweep

Kuruva Dweep or Kuruva island is a group of three densely wooded, uninhabited islands in

Wayanad. The place is famous for it’s river rafting and fiber boats facilities. Entrance to the

island is monitored by the Forest Department and it’s a hard task to get your tickets booked.

The best time to visit the Kuruva Island is between December and April. There’s a pass of

10. Brahmagiri Trekking


One of the most popular trek in Wayanad, Brahmagiri trekking is one hell of an experience to the nature lovers and adventure seekers. The trekking that starts from the camp shed at

Thirunelli, lasts more than 3 hours. The 10 kms walk will be quite tiring, but it also helps

rejuvenate both your mind and body. One who’s not usually used with leeches have to be

careful about one’s own. Monday and Friday are the holidays. Besides this, there would be

just 4 slots available in the department, before 10 am in the morning. Even though the

weather is chilling here, every Eco Tourism package is subject to change based on climate
